Pomade, Clay, Wax, or Paste — Which Hair Product Should You Actually Be Using?

Posted March 12, 2026 • by Zak Galindo

The Hair Product Aisle Is Genuinely Overwhelming

Walk into any drugstore and look at the men's hair product section. Pomades, clays, waxes, gels, pastes, creams, mousses. Most of them have vague descriptions and zero guidance on who any of it is actually for. Most guys grab the same thing they've been using since high school or pick whatever looks good on the packaging. Neither approach works that well.

The Main Products and What They're For

Pomade: High Shine, Slick and Polished

Pomade gives you a shiny, polished finish. It's the product for classic looks like the side part, the pompadour, or the slicked-back style. Works best on straight or wavy hair. There are oil-based and water-based pomades. Water-based washes out easily and is usually the better choice for most guys.

Clay: Matte Finish, Most Versatile

If you only buy one product, make it a clay. It gives you texture and hold without shine. The finish is natural and matte — what most guys are going for when they want their hair to look styled without looking like they tried too hard. It also reworks throughout the day. Clay works on almost every hair type and style. If you don't know what to buy, clay is the answer.

Wax: High Hold, Structured Looks

Wax gives you strong hold with a finish that lands somewhere between clay and pomade. Good for shorter styles that need structure and definition. Not as reworkable as clay once it sets. Best for guys who style their hair once in the morning and leave it alone.

Paste: Natural Finish for Longer or Thicker Hair

Paste has a thinner consistency that distributes more easily through longer or thicker hair. Gives you a natural-looking finish with some hold and texture. Works well for guys with medium to longer tops who want definition without the product being obvious.

Gel: Maximum Hold, Old School

Gel gives the most hold of any product but dries hard and flakes when you touch it. Most barbers today recommend avoiding gel unless you have a specific reason for it.

How to Apply Product Correctly

Ask Your Barber What They Used

When your barber applies product at the end of your cut, ask them what it is and why they chose it. They picked that product specifically for your hair type and your style. At Galindo's we stock products formulated in the UK, which maintains higher safety standards than the US FDA. Everything we carry is paraben-free and sulfate-free.

The Bottom Line

For most guys, a good clay handles 90% of daily styling needs. If you want a polished classic look, go with a water-based pomade. If you need strong hold and structure, try a wax. If you have longer or thicker hair, a paste will serve you better.
